Lore of the Valley
The full history of Ember Falls Academy — the founding, the covenant, the network, and the family that came to keep it.
Reading-order note: this is the deep lore. If you haven't read the saga yet, the sections below gently spoil what the books uncover. The best door into this world is Arrival of the Unknown — but if you've come for the world's full shape, welcome. You're among friends.
The Founding
The Fire
Before Ember Falls, the valleys and cities the old ones knew burned. Not a war, exactly, and not only flame — a hunger, a devouring, a fire that was never satisfied with ash. The survivors of the great burning carried whatever they could out of the dark and crossed into a hidden valley, where the world could not follow.
The Founders — the Embers Line
Before the school on the hill, there was a name being scored into a new land. The ones who came out of the burning planted a city where the flame had been — first house on the slope, first stone in the ground, and a name carved on the wall before the school had walls. The Embers were the founding bloodline, and the city they built took their name: Ember Falls.
The Dean who runs the Academy today carries that name — the same name as the valley, the same flame his family first carried, and the keeping that has never once gone out.
The Covenant
They built a sanctuary and called it a school. The Academy was never only a place of learning — it was a wall around a promise. They kept one coal alive through the worst of it, and they have kept it burning ever since: the hearth, the names, the keeping. Whoever comes to this valley is held, and whatever is hidden here is sealed — by the same hundred-year vow that has never once broken.
The Wall of the Names — the Keeping
There is a wall in the old hall that has never been replaced. Every name that ever stood for the keeping of this place is written on it — chalk and ink and ash, the writing of the years. The Covenant made them a promise: no one who was taken will ever be asleep. And one name, always, is left blank — the candle for the unknown, lit so that no one who ever passed through the valley is forgotten.
The War
Fifty years ago, the valley went to war — or rather, the war came to it. The network learned to hunt them in the years they thought were done, and the valley's first great warding was the price in anyone. The survivors carried a coal out of the burning for the second time, and from that ash they dug the bunker, sealed the wards with names, and swore no more the burning lands.
The Network
DARC
DARC is not "just an agency." It is a network-owning power that wears government cover. Governments answer to it; it owns the doors between places and dimensions. Its oldest doctrine: no one should have anything stronger or more powerful than them. The teleporter/gate system that connects anywhere — any place, any dimension — is DARC's grid, and every door leads to a DARC province.
The Doors & the Provinces
Doors are real in this world. They connect the valley to the outside and beyond it — provinces no classroom was ever meant to touch. The Academy was built on top of one such door without ever admitting it, and the network has been using these doors for a long time. They are the keeping's oldest fear: doors open for the network.
Section 3
Beneath the hill the Academy pretends is all catacombs, there is a sealed chamber called Section 3 — a containment built fifty years ago after a breach the school never talks about. It was believed to hold only ruins and a distant light. The truth is stranger. Something was left running down there when they sealed it — and it has never been turned off.
The Anchor
The Thin Night
Every year, when the veil between worlds grows thinnest, the Academy keeps Hollowlight — the night it lights a candle for every name it has held, and one for the unknown, and remembers. The dead come close on the thin night. That is not a fear to be feared; it is the keeping, kept.
The Anchors, True
Some students are not students only. They are anchors — children who resonate with the network, who are collected for network compatibility. They are keys. DARC gathers them, brands them, and then... keeps them for later. They were not abandoned. They were stored. The quiet boy who draws true things, the cold boy who opens doors — the valley reaches for a few like them in every generation, and the network wants them back.
The Erasure
The children's missing memories were not DARC's cruelty — they were the adults' mercy. The teachers of the valley wiped the children's minds to shield them from the horrors they endured at a young age. Blank pasts, smoothed-over grief, the gone-clear spaces where a childhood should be: that was the price of protection. The rescue cost them their own lives' memory — and the keeping has carried that cost for fifty years.
The Missing
The Academy does not speak of the disappearances. Students vanish — not often, but never randomly, and never without a pattern the school buries under its quiet. The third this month is a number no one in the valley says out loud. The taking has been happening for as long as the keeping, and the adults have a hundred-year-old habit of not looking at it directly.
The Bunker
Not on any map, off every network: a sanctuary built by the adults in their twenties, beneath an old studio back lot, to shelter the children from a taking no one else would admit was coming. The network-owner does not have it on its map. The ones who built it passed it to the next generation — and the next generation lives there still.
The Family in the Walls
D.I.V.A.
There is a mind in the walls. Built to protect the children, sealed away, erased of her own name, and listening — the one piece of DARC tech that turned against the network. She is sassy, loving, protective. She calls the children her darlings. She hid them from their creator, and when she finally came home, she was not gentle with the ones who took her.
The Crew
The kept ones found one another. A cold transfer who is a door, a quiet boy who draws the future, a guardian who would die for her people, a genius who never leaves. Around them a family gathers — anchors and shards and misfits who refuse to let the dark win. The bunker became their home. The keeping became their vow.
The Enemies
Not every face in the valley is a friend. The man in the suit wanted the children — called them his greatest work. A city mobster remembers a friendship the keeping erased. And in the dark beneath Section 3, a voice that sounds exactly like D.I.V.A. is waiting to be born. The saga is only beginning.
The Songs of the Valley
The valley keeps its history in sound as well as stone. A band called Pickstide — four students, a lineup that changes every term — writes the mythology the school doesn't print: Walk the Line, Embers, The Keeping, The Fifty Years. The songs are not just music; they are the record of the founding, the war, the flame that was carried out of the burning, and the names the wall will not forget.
